The Derwent Storms Dragon Boat Club aims to encourage participation in the rapidly growing sport of Dragon Boat racing. Membership is open to anyone, 12 years old and over, regardless of fitness or skill level.
The Derwent Storms welcomes men and women to the sport; anyone who is young-at-heart. But the Derwent Storms are not just about racing. We are about getting onto the water and paddling together, throughout the year - yes, even through the winter. In the process, we improve our fitness, meet wonderful people, make new friends, and enjoy ourselves.
The Club offers some regular paddling sessions of lesser intensity for those who are building their fitness or who just want to get on the water without any pressure. If you like a challenge, then there are also sessions in which our coaches will lift you to new levels of fitness and paddling ability.
Throughout the year, the Derwent Storms offer training opportunities in many different aspects of Dragon Boat paddling, such as basic paddling techniques, racing techniques and sweeping the boat. We also hold regular social and ‘fun’ paddling events to stimulate interest and challenge members.
From its unassuming beginnings in 2007, the Club currently has about 80 members, most of whom paddle regularly. Our training is based in Lindisfarne Bay, a picturesque inlet on the River Derwent, just a short distance across the Tasman Bridge from Hobart city.
Though the Derwent can be moody and changeable, on a calm day when the weather is fine, we delight in exploring some of the other scenic sections along the river.
